Jaguars GM: No decision made on Blake Bortles’ contract option

Could the Green Bay Packers sign Blake Bortles?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are really taking their time in deciding whether to commit to struggling young quarterback Blake Bortles beyond the 2017 season.

Facing a May deadline to pick up the fifth-year option on his contract, the Jaguars themselves appear to be undecided on what to do. At the very least, that’s the sentiment from general manager David Caldwell.

Bortles, a first-round pick of the Jags back in 2014, has struggled big time with decision making throughout his career. All said, the former top-three pick has thrown 51 interceptions in 45 career starts. He’s also been historically bad when it comes to gifting the other team touchdowns (more on that here).

Though, short of the Jaguars selecting a quarterback No. 4 overall next week, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of other options out there. Despite his lackluster play, Bortles still boasts some solid upside and has the weapons he needs to succeed on offense.

If it were just a question about that, Bortles’ contract option would have already been picked up. As of right now, Bortles’ salary for the 2018 season would be nearly $23 million if the team were to pick up that option. This is a whole heck of a lot of cash for an unproven quarterback with a track record of being mistake prone.

It will be interesting to see what happens here. But expect Jacksonville to wait until after the upcoming draft to make a final decision on Bortles. Should his option not be picked up, the former Central Florida star will be an unrestricted free agent following the 2017 season.
