Hawks engineer historic comeback against Cavaliers

Atlanta Hawks

At the end of three quarters, the Cleveland Cavaliers led the Atlanta Hawks 93-67. The fans at Phillips Arena could have almost been forgiven had they all got up and went home to watch the final round of The Masters.

17 minutes of basketball later, the final buzzer sounded and the Hawks had won by the score of 126-125. They outscored Cleveland 44-18 in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 111. Then, they won in overtime, going ahead with a Mike Muscala three launched with 35 seconds to go and never looking back.

Atlanta became the third team ever to erase a 26-point deficit in the 4th quarter, per NBA.com. If you’re wondering about win probability, imagine Disney World’s Tower of Terror ride in graph form.

LeBron James fouled out in overtime after racking up a triple-double — scoring 32, rebounding 15 and assisting 10. It was Kyrie Irving, however, who led the way for Cleveland with 42 points. It wasn’t enough in the end.

This is the third straight Hawks win, all against the East’s top two teams. They beat Cleveland 114-110 on Friday night as well.

With Paul Millsap back in the lineup for two of those three games, scoring 22 on 5/11 shooting on Sunday, it’s fair to say that Atlanta is out of the woods. The team had lost 9-of-11 since mid-March in a span that included Millsap’s eight-game absence with a knee injury before this current stretch.
