According to Boston Herald’s legal columnist Bob McGovern, the family of the late Aaron Hernandez will be donating his brain to science forChronic Traumatic Encephalopathy study.

“CTE” according to the Brain Injury Research Institute “is a progressive degenerative disease which afflicts the brain of people who have suffered repeated concussions and traumatic brain injuries, such as athletes who take part in contact sports, members of the military and others.”

The former Patriots star was discovered Wednesday morning in his jail cell where he had reportedly committed suicide at the Souza-Baranowski prison in Shirley, Massachusetts. After multiple resuscitation techniques had been performed, Hernandez was pronounced dead early that morning.

He had just been found not guilty on two counts of murder from an incident back in 2012. He had been acquitted, but was serving a life sentence for the 2013 slaying of Odin Lloyd and was planning to appeal the case.

Hernandez was 27-years-old.
