Vikings GM indicates retaining Adrian Peterson is not a priority

Adrian Peterson

Minnesota Vikings’ general manager Rick Spielman’s guess as to how the market shakes out for running back Adrian Peterson is as good as yours.

“I have no idea (what the market may look like),” said Spielman, via NFL.com. “I believe in just putting everything up front and on the table. I told (Peterson) there were some areas we’d like to address. The one thing you can’t predict is what the market is going to be. Usually, you have expectations coming into this market when we get into the negotiating window with other free agents next week. You might have expectations today and all the sudden those expectations change in a week.”

Peterson, who will hit free agency next week, has only played 20 games in the past three seasons and has a history of knee injuries. In the three games he played this season, the future Hall of Famer averaged just 1.9 yards per carry, though much of it was due to Minnesota’s disastrous offensive line.

However, all of those factors will make teams hesitant to go after Peterson, as will his history of trouble running out of the shotgun. As for Minnesota, the Vikings are “very open” to a return, according to Spielman.
