Report: Saints have no interest in Johnny Manziel

There was a whole lot of drama taking place surrounding the New Orleans Saints last week when reports surfaced that the team might be interested in free agent quarterback Johnny Manziel.

It stemmed from Saints head coach Sean Payton showing some level of interest in the embattled quarterback.

Now, as the Saints prepare for next month’s draft, another report is surfacing that the team has no interest in signing Manziel.

Was this a whole lot to do about nothing? Based on Cole’s report, there’s definitely a case that could be made for that. Payton meeting with Manziel in the first place didn’t signify that the Saints were somehow going to sign a quarterback off the street with the checkered history Manziel presents.

A former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns back in 2013, Manziel bombed out in the NFL in just two seasons. He was charged with domestic violence stemming from an incident with then girlfriend Colleen Crowley. This came after Manziel checked himself into rehab for substance abuse.

Now looking to make a comeback in the NFL, Manziel is still facing a four-game ban from the league for violating its substance abuse policy.

If the Saints were indeed looking for a young quarterback to sit behind Drew Brees, it would make more sense to go the draft route in the first place. We covered that in detail once news broke of the team’s reported “interest” in Manziel (more on that here).

It now looks like the Saints may never have really been interested in signing the free agent.
