Report: Martellus Bennett seeking $9 million per year in free agency

Martellus Bennett

Fresh off his top touchdown-producing season with the Super Bowl champs, tight end Martellus Bennett is looking to get paid.

Appearing on NFL Network’s Free Agency Frenzy, Mike Garafolo said Bennett is looking for $9 million per year on his next deal, which would be much more than what Rob Gronkowski is set to earn next year.

Interestingly, this number has been bandied about before as Bennett’s target — something that the tight end wasn’t keen on reading about recently.

Bennett, after winning a Super Bowl, made comments that indicates he does expect to get paid like a champ, who often get overpaid. That said, he also made a comment about how staying in New England would potentially be the best move for his post-football life, so it’s hard to know where he’ll end up. What we do know is that the Patriots absolutely do not overpay players.

When the 2017 NFL season begins, Bennett will be 30 years old. Though he did deal with an injury last year, he still appears to have plenty of gas left in his tank and could certainly elevate the tight end position for quite a few teams around the league. With that in mind, it stands to reason he’ll rake in a big contract in an offseason when teams have gobs of cash to spend.
