Report: Jets have touched base with Josh McCown

Josh McCown

The New York Jets are searching far and wide for quarterback options, including reportedly reaching out to Josh McCown, the veteran journeyman who played for the Cleveland Browns the past two years.

One other quarterback the Jets have reportedly been considering is none other than recently released Jay Cutler, formerly of the Chicago Bears (more on that here).

In all likelihood, whoever the Jets bring aboard via the free agency route will be first in line to start during the 2017 season. The reason for this is that the two other quarterbacks on the roster, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty, are both not near ready (if they’ll ever be) to start an NFL game.

In fact, one report described the Jets as having an “overwhelming belief” that last year’s second-round pick, Hackenberg, is nowhere near ready to start. And Petty showed quite clearly last year that he’s not the answer, either.

Of course, one name that is conspicuously absent here is Colin Kaepernick, who actually has a professional relationship with new offensive coordinator John Morton.

Another thing to consider is that, whoever does start for the Jets in 2017, it’s almost a certainty that this team won’t be winning many games, regardless. After dumping many of its top veteran players this offseason, this is a team in rebuilding mode. And none of the quarterbacks available on the market or in the upcoming draft have the clout to carry this team on their back.
