Report: Hassan Childs facing 3 counts of aggravated assault, pot possession

Hassan Childs

University of South Florida’s Hassan Childs was shot over the weekend, and now he’s facing charges stemming from that incident.

According to Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times, Childs is facing three counts of aggravated assault and one count of misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Childs was shot three times in the upper arm and torso after what was described as a road-rage incident, per Knight. The man who shot him, Jovanni Jimenez, said he shot Childs in self defense. These charges, one day later, seem to support that claim.

Previous to this incident, Knight reports Childs had no criminal record in Florida.

USF head coach Charlie Strong sent out a statement Sunday in response to Childs’ shooting and his condition.

“Thankfully Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured,” Strong said. “There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time.”

Playing in 20 games for the Bulls since 2013, Childs has tallied 28 tackles and three interceptions. He missed the entire 2015 season with a torn ACL.
