Report: Cardinals interested in White Sox ace Jose Quintana

With the MLB regular season set to get going this weekend, teams are finalizing their 25-man rosters. They are looking forward to moving on from meaningless preseason games in hopes of taking down the defending champion Chicago Cubs.

That latter goal has to be what is driving the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals following a 2016 campaign that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time in six years.

As St. Louis prepares for its season opener Sunday against the aforementioned Cubs, they are reportedly showing strong interest in Chicago White Sox ace starter Jose Quintana.

“While the belief now is that Quintana won’t be traded until closer to the trade deadline, the Cardinals could be a sleeper team for Quintana,” Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported on Thursday. “Word is, they have quietly showed interest in the White Sox pitching ace, and the Cardinals have the combination of young players and prospects to make it work.”

Quintana was on the trade block all winter long as the White Sox looked to develop their farm system in the beginning stages of what has to be considered a long-term rebuild. Remember, the team dealt away former ace Chris Sale to Boston during the offseason.

Quintana, 28, has been a mainstay in the White Sox’ rotation over the past five years. This past season saw him post a 13-12 record with a 3.20 ERA and 1.16 WHIP en route to earning his first All-Star appearance.

It makes sense that St. Louis might be interested in the veteran. Young phenom Alex Reyes is sidelined for the entire 2017 season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery back in February. Meanwhile, there’s definitely some questions about the remainder of the Cardinals’ rotation.

If St. Louis wants to contend with Chicago in the NL Central, it will likely have to add another top-end arm to the mix before July’s trade deadline. Could Quintana be that guy?
