Report: Browns releasing QB Robert Griffin III

A day after acquiring Brock Osweiler from the Houston Texans, the Cleveland Browns are set to release former No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III.

This news comes via Josina Anderson of ESPN.

It was concluded on Wednesday that the Browns might end up releasing RGIII, but that now seems all but official.

We’re not yet sure whether the Browns will roll with Osweiler under center when the 2017 season comes calling. Heck, he might not even be on the roster (more on that here).

What we do know is that Cleveland seems to be infatuated with New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Should a trade be worked out there (unlikely), there really wouldn’t be any room for RGIII on the roster. Add in the fact that Cleveland boasts two first-round picks in this year’s draft, and that’s magnified even further.

RGIII, 27, started five games in his only season with the Browns. In the process, he put up less than 900 passing yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Needless to say, the former Pro Bowler has seen his career go down in flames. It will be interesting to see if he receives any real interest on the free-agent market.
