Report: 49ers, Rams emerge as possible landing spots for Tony Romo

Tony Romo has no plans to file his retirement paperwork

Tony Romo won’t be playing for the Dallas Cowboys in 2017. This much we know for sure. What we don’t yet know is where the veteran quarterback will land, though the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos have been mentioned as the strongest possibilities for weeks now.

According to a new report, however, a couple of unlikely teams have emerged as legitimate landing spots for Romo, who appears to be destined for a release in the near future.

“The other teams that I have heard are doing work on Romo, and where he could legitimately land, are the Rams and the 49ers,” writesJason La Canfora of CBS Sports. “I’m not sure any other suitors make sense.”

It may sound strange to hear the San Francisco 49ers mentioned among the teams Romo might end up signing with. After all, he wants to play for a contender, and the 49ers are likely a couple of years away from contending, and that’s if they do all the right things in the draft and free agency during that time.

That said, Romo might be a perfect fit in San Francisco, teaming up with Kyle Shanahan. It’s a scenario we’ve played out recently, which you can read about here.

Los Angeles is a bit more intriguing from the perspective of Romo wanting to win right now. The Rams feature a top-end defense and an elite running back. What they need help with is up front on the offensive line and at receiver, though we’ve seen top quarterbacks make mediocre receivers look fantastic around the league for years. Adding Romo to the mix might be the best thing the Rams could ever do for young  Jared Goff as well.

In the end, we’d still be shocked to see Romo end up in either Los Angeles or Santa Clara. In this scribe’s opinion, an in-state move to Houston makes the most sense. That said, sometimes the NFL makes no sense at all, and we’ll be watching closely to see what happens in the coming weeks.
