New Raiders TE Jared Cook compares Derek Carr to Aaron Rodgers

Veteran tight end Jared Cook is surely happy to have found a home. After spending last season with the Green Bay Packers, the 29-year-old veteran signed with the Oakland Raiders on Thursday. It was a big move for a Raiders offense that didn’t get much at all from the tight end position last season.

In speaking with media in Northern California after the signing became official, Cook had an interesting comparison to draw between his now current quarterback Derek Carr and Packers signal caller Aaron Rodgers.

While that may seem to be downright outlandish, the stats tell us a story of a quarterback in Carr who has been among the best young performers at his position in recent NFL history. Over the course of his first three seasons in the NFL, Carr is averaging 3,731 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

To put that into perspective, Rodgers averaged 4,131 yards with 29 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his first three years as a starter.

There’s definitely a statistical comparison to draw here. It also must be noted that Rodgers sat behind Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre for three seasons before taking over a loaded Packers team. On the other hand, Carr had to start out of the gate as a rookie for a Raiders squad that was coming off a four-win season.

From a confidence and swag standpoint, that’s definitely a solid comparison to draw. Dating back to his days with Fresno State, Carr was never afraid to make the difficult throw. He always had confidence in himself, and that’s translated well over to the NFL. For his part, Rodgers is also known as one of the cockiest quarterbacks in the NFL. In reality, that’s what makes these two so darn good.

We have no real idea of Carr will progress to the lengths we have seen from Rodgers throughout his career in Green Bay. What we do know is that their games a pretty similar. Cook himself should also be a tremendous fit for an up-and-coming Raiders squad that put up 12 wins a season ago.
