Mariners SP Drew Smyly expected to miss six-to-eight weeks

The Seattle Mariners receives some bad news in the lead up to Opening Day. The team announced on Friday that left-handed starter Drew Smyly will misss the first six-to-eight weeks of the season with a flexor strain in his throwing elbow.

“We don’t think this is going to result in a surgical intervention,” general manager Jerry Dipoto said of the injury, via The New Tribune. “But more rest and rehab. We do anticipate this not being a short-term thing.”

This is Smyly’s fifth trip to the disabled list since the 2012 season. He was acquired from the Tampa Ray Rays during the winter in exchange for prospect Mallex Smith and two others. Last season saw the veteran post a 7-12 record with a 4.88 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 30 starts for Seattle.

Smyly was expected to at least anchor the back-end of Seattle’s rotation to start the season. With him out of action for potentially the first two months, Ariel Miranda will be re-called to join the team’s Opening Day five-man rotation.
