Executive on Jay Cutler: ‘He will definitely be a starter in 2017’

Jay Cutler

When the Chicago Bears reportedly placed Jay Cutler on the trading block late last month, there weren’t many out there who concluded Chicago would be able to get anything for the embattled veteran.

That’s until we realize just how desperate teams are for a proven quarterback under center. As many as a quarter of NFL teams will be looking for a new starter when free agency opens next week. Proven to be able to hold down the fort at quarterback, Chicago figured it would test the waters for Cutler.

Now comes this report from MMQB’s Jenny Vrentas suggesting that at least one team executive around the NFL firmly believes Cutler will be a starter next season.

“There are not enough quality quarterbacks, so he (Cutler) will definitely be a starter in 2017,” the report read.

Vrentas went on to indicate that she’s been told a fifth-round pick might be the going rate for Cutler on the trade block.

Cutler, 33, is set to count $16 million against the cap in 2017. Based on the fact that he’s struggled to do anything of substance over the past three seasons, that seems to be an alarmingly high salary. Considering the former first-round pick also missed 10 games to injury last season, this is magnified even further.

Then again, $16 million for a quarterback in today’s market might be the new normal. In fact, that would make Cutler the 22nd highest-paid quarterback in the NFL next season.

Having thrown 34 interceptions in his past 35 starts, it’s not yet known whether a team would pay that. If nothing else, the idea that Chicago might not be able to get something for Cutler doesn’t seem like its etched in stone anymore.
