Ryan Fitzpatrick’s contract voids, now a free agent

Ryan Fitzpatrick

The New York Jets will surely be in the market for a new starting quarterback after the trio who took snaps under center this past season fizzled out big time.

It was a disastrous second season for Todd Bowles as the Jets’ head coach. He overlooked a team that won five games after finishing with double-digit wins the prior season. In the process, the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith and Bryce Petty threw 16 touchdowns compared to 25 interceptions.

So it shouldn’t be a surprise that New York isn’t expected to bring Fitzpatrick or Smith back into the mix next season. And for his part, Fitzpatrick’s contract voided with the Jets on Friday, making him a free agent (via Newsday).

New York will have to pay Fitzpatrick $5 million of the $10 million he was set to be paid in 2017 as part of the signing bonus portion of his contract.

After being benched by the Jets this past season, it sure seems unlikely that Fitzpatrick will find a starting job somewhere in the NFL. This, despite the fact that multiple teams have less-than-stellar quarterback situations and the free-agent market itself is watered down at this position.

Fitzpatrick, 34, threw 12 touchdowns compared to 17 interceptions en route to leading New York to a 3-8 record in 11 starts this past season. That came on the heels of a career-best 2015 performance that saw him throw 31 touchdowns and just 15 interceptions.
