Report: Mike Napoli to sign one-year deal with Rangers

Multiple reports state Mike Napoli will re-sign with the Texas Rangers on a one-year deal.

According to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the 35-year-old could be returning to the Rangers for a third time.

According to Wilson, two of his sources say the deal has been agreed upon. Two more of his sources tell him that “talks are progressing but it’s too early to say that an agreement is in place.”

In three seasons with the Rangers, the 2012 All-Star catcher had 59 home runs, 141 RBI and has a career .277/.381/.548 slash line with the club.

He could be an alternate at the first base position that is already pretty full with Ryan Rua, Jurickson Profar and possibly Joey Gallo, but he has the advantage against lefties. There’s always the designated hitter option as well.

Napoli brings the perfect veteran presence to the reigning AL West Champions that could benefit from a leader heading into 2017 where the Rangers are favorites for another shot at postseason glory.

The 11-year veteran finished the 2016 season with the Cleveland Indians hitting a .239 batting average with 34 home runs.
