Report: Kirk Cousins ‘expected’ to be hit with franchise tag

Kirk Cousins Redskins

The Washington Redskins may solve their Kirk Cousins dilemma by putting it off to the side for another year.

Despite reported internal resistance to giving Cousins the tag (more on that here), there is clearly support for the quarterback among his teammates. Tagging Cousins would give general manager Scot McCloughan another year to evaluate Cousins, who has been one of the most divisive quarterbacks in the league since taking over the starting job two seasons ago.

Cousins ranked third in DYAR and fifth in DVOA among quarterbacks last season. However, his 12 interceptions raised eyebrows, as did his tendency to throw short and his seeming reliance on a strong crop of receivers.

The franchise tag will pay Cousins $24 million in 2017 should the Redskins levy it.
