In the least surprising news thus far during the NFL offseason, the New York Jets are reportedly set to release former Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Revis was long expected to be a salary cap casualty following a disastrous performance for the team last season. That was only magnified by a recent off-field incident that saw Revis himself charged with multiple felonies after a fight (more on that here).
Revis, 31, was set to count $15.3 million against the cap in 2017. By releasing him, the Jets save nearly $10 million in cap room. Though, there’s definitely a scenario in play here that suggests the team will go after the remaining near $6 million due to Revis’ recent bout with the law.
It remains to be seen whether Revis will receive much interest on the free-agent market. His preliminary trial is set for the middle of March, almost one week after free agency itself starts. In reality, what happens in court will likely play a role in Revis’ future in the NFL.
He finished this past season recording 53 tackles, one interception and just five passes defended. The defensive back’s best days are clearly behind him. Add in Revis’ legal troubles, and there’s a chance his playing days are over.
