Report: Buccaneers to release CB Alterraun Verner

Alterraun Verner

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly parting ways with cornerback Alterraun Verner, who was heading into the final year of a four-year contract.

Verner was set to earn $6.5 million this year, but none of the money was guaranteed. As Ian Rapoport noted, this move signals the Bucs are very happy with the development of Vernon Hargreaves, who’ll be in his second year in 2017.

Last season, Verner played in all 16 games but started just three. He intercepted one pass, defended seven more and tallied 13 tackles. That’s not enough production for a guy set to make as much as he was due.

Verner is just 28 and will certainly catch on with a team for the 2017 season. During his career, he’s started 70 games and has nabbed 15 interceptions, including one pick-six.
