President George H.W. Bush to conduct Super Bowl LI coin toss

Former President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush will conduct the coin toss for Super Bowl LI in Houston on Sunday.

One of five living former presidents, the elder Bush and his wife were just released from the hospital after extended stays. The former president had been dealing with bacterial pneumonia while Barbara Bush was hospitalized due to viral bronchitis.

Natives of Houston, the Bush family itself is seen as royalty in the region. For her part, the former First Lady joked earlier that she needed to be released from the hospital in order to help the city host the big game (more on that here).

President from 1989-93, the 92-year-old Bush has been dealing with health problems for some time and has recently found himself confined to a wheelchair.

It’s pretty awesome that the NFL would honor him and his tremendous service to this nation shortly after the elder Bush was released from the hospital.
