Marlins players to wear patch honoring the late Jose Fernandez

Jose Fernandez was one of the brightest young stars in the game of baseball. A dominating pitcher and a charasmatic figure, Fernandez’s life was tragically cut short when he died in a boating accident in Miami back in September.

It was a reminder that life itself is precious. That no matter how successful and positive you are, it can come to an end in the matter of seconds.

In the months following Fernandez’s tragic death, the entire Miami community came together to mourn the young man. It was a sobering time for the Marlins, as evidenced by this emotional display from Dee Gordon in the team’s first game following Fernandez’s death at the age of 24.

Now, as the Marlins prepare for their first season without Fernandez, players on the team will wear his No. 16 on a patch to pay tribute to a man that was lost way too soon.

Our hope here is that the Marlins and their players can move forward through what are still difficult times for everyone involved. That they can stick together and perform at a high clip on the field while continuing to honor one of the most-talented pitchers the modern era of baseball has ever seen.
