Texas Rangers first baseman Josh Hamilton left Arizona Tuesday, flying to Houston to get his left knee checked out after experiencing pain in the reconstructed joint.

“He felt the discomfort while running arcs on the outfield grass during the Texas Rangers’ first full-squad workout of spring training,” wrote Jeff Wilson of the Star Telegram. “The Rangers’ training staff consulted with Dr. Walt Lowe, who performed Hamilton’s season-ending surgery June 8, and he wanted to examine Hamilton.”

Hamilton had reconstructive knee surgery last June after tearing his ACL. The injury was more significant than originally thought, and many speculated his time with the Rangers was at an end following the surgery.

But he was determined to make a comeback, moving to first base this spring to make himself a more versatile player “as a non-roster invitee to camp,” per Wilson. It’s unknown at this time how long Hamilton will be away from the team.

“We want to see what Dr. Lowe has to say,” assistant general manager Mike Daly said. “We want to make sure Josh is healthy.”

Hamilton missed the entire 2016 season with knee issues. The former AL MVP has a tough road ahead of him to make it back to the big leagues, if that’s even possible.
