Geno Smith ‘fine’ with being backup QB

Geno Smith

The last few seasons have been challenging for Geno Smith. Still, as he heads into free agency, Smith seems to be optimistic about his future.

In an interview, Smith said that “all possibilities are on the table” and made it clear that he wouldn’t have a problem backing up a starting quarteraback.

“I can help a team in a number of ways,” he said in an interview with Ian Rapoport. “When it comes to being a starter, that’s everyone’s goal. Everyone wants to go out there and be the guy. You want to know that the team, the organization, the franchise, believes in you. That just takes work; that takes time. Even if you have to go to the bottom, be a a backup, and climb your way back up to the top, that’s fine with me. I’m comfortable in that position. I’ve been in this league four years. I’ve been a starter and a backup.”

Smith has played only sparingly with the New York Jets over the last two seasons.

He missed the beginning of the 2015 season due to injuries sustained in a one-sided fight with then teammate IK Enemkpali. With Ryan Fitzpatrick playing well through that season, Smith got into only one game. In 2016, Smith replaced an ineffective Fitzpatrick in Week 6 and started the following week, but a knee injury ended his season in Week 7.

Despite all of that, Smith could well have a chance to at least compete for a starting job somewhere. Plenty of teams (including the Jets) have less than desirable quarterback situations. Given the relatively underwhelming nature of the draft class and free agent market, quarterbacks like Smith should have a chance to play for a starting job if he signs with the right team.
