DeMarcus Cousins on Kings trading him : ‘It was a coward move’

DeMarcus Cousins

Now a member of the New Orleans Pelicans, DeMarcus Cousins would be best served simply focusing on what’s happening with his new team.

It’s definitely hard to do considering he is less than a week removed from being traded by a team that he starred for during nearly seven up-and-down seasons. This is made more difficult by the fact that Cousins’ relationship with Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé and general manager Vlade Divac simply doesn’t seem salvageable at this point.

In talking about the process that led to his trade from Sacramento, Cousins opened up big time to ESPN’s Marc Spears. When asked about whether he would like to speak to Ranadivé and Divac again, Cousins had this to say.

“Nah. For what? It was a coward move, so I’m pretty sure I will get a coward response. For what? And I’ve seen this happen before. I’ve been there through all same types,” Cousins said.  “I was there with [coach] Mike Malone’s [firing]. I’ve seen how they operate. I know what kind of answer I will get anyway. So, what is the point?”

Cousins also noted in the in-depth interview that Divac made a trip to his house a week before the deal to tell the three-time All-Star that he would not be traded. All the while, Divac was working on potential trades behind the scenes.

It sure is an interesting dynamic to look at here. The Kings have been subjected to widespread criticism after trading Cousins. Some of said criticism has come in the form of the team not acquiring value in the deal. But most of it surrounds the team’s handling of the entire process (more on that here).

For Cousins’ part, he’s not wrong here. If Divac did indeed come meet with him personally to say he wasn’t going to be traded, it is a bad look for the Kings. That much is hard to deny.
