Report: Braves sign former Chiefs CB Sanders Commings

It might not be Deion Sanders, Michael Jordan or Tim Tebow, but the Atlanta Braves made some pretty interesting news on Thursday. According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Atlanta has signed former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Sanders Commings.

Really, this is a thing.

Commings, originally selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, played in only two games with the team before seeing his career on the gridiron fizzle out due to injury. This came after a stellar college career at Georgia that saw him start 34 games in the defensive backfield.

Out of baseball since his high school days, Commings faces a long road ahead of himself. He will likely start out at the lowest level the minors have to offer, attempting to work his way up from there.

In showing support for his client, former MLB player and current agent Jerry Hairston Jr. had this to say previously.

“If he had chosen baseball, he would be in the major leagues right now,” Hairston said, via Fox Sports. “He’s a Starling Marte type of talent. He’s that good.”

Interestingly enough, the former NFL defensive back was actually a 37th-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbaks back in the 2008 MLB Draft. Whether this somehow means he can make a successful transition from the gridiron to the baseball diamond remains to be seen.

The good news here is that Commings is a native of Augusta, Georgia. This means he’ll have the friendly confines of his backyard to rely on as he attempts this career change.
