Atlanta mayor signs executive order allowing bars to remain open later on Super Bowl Sunday

Zoo Atlanta

The Atlanta Falcons and their fans are excitedly hopeful that Sunday night equals party time after Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots.

To that end, Mayor Kasim Reed has issued an executive order allowing bars in Atlanta to remain open much later than usual the night of the big game.

Here is a portion of the executive order (h/t Atlanta Eater) that allows Atlanta bars, normally saddled with a midnight closing time policy, to remain open until 2:30 a.m..

“Whereas, the Mayor, in celebration of the Atlanta Falcons NFC Championship win; and in recognition of the desire of the citizens of and visitors to the City of Atlanta to celebrate the Falcons participation in Super Bowl LI, hereby suspends enforcement of the current allowable hours of operation at certain locations licensed for the sale of alcohol for on premises consumption on Super Bowl Sunday so as to accommodate the festive nature of this day.”

If the Falcons do pull off the win in Super Bowl LI over the Pats, it’s going to be a crazy scene in Atlanta. The Falcons have never won a Super Bowl, and they have appeared in just one before Sunday’s title bout. That appearance led to a loss to the Denver Broncos.

Needless to say, downtown Atlanta is going to be party central if the Falcons win. On that note, here’s a look at the biggest things to watch for during the Super Bowl.

On the other hand, if they lose folks will have a couple more hours to drink away their sorrows. Stay safe out there, everyone, and call a cab when you’re ready to meander home.
