Cowboys teammate: Tony Romo ‘looked like 2014 Romo’ in practice last year

Tony Romo

Not a day goes by that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo does not make the sports news headlines. The latest being that he expects to be released by the Cowboys which could land him either with another team, or possibly into retirement (more on that here).

One person in favor of Romo continuing his career with another NFL franchise is Cowboys teammate and impending free agent safety, Barry Church.

“Go get ’em,” Church said about the quarterback in a Monday interview with 105.3 The Fan (h/t SportsDay.com). “He’s a heck of a competitor, the ultimate team leader. He can only help any team out there. Other than what, New England, he can pretty much help every team. If they asked me, I’d say yeah, go get him.”

That’s quite lofty praise regarding the veteran quarterback. Church is pretty much saying Romo is better than the quarterbacks out there with the exception of Tom Brady.

Church further showered Romo with praise, and discussed watching him in practice last year.

“He looked like 2014 Romo when he was out there slinging it,” Church said. “He looked good to me, like he had a lot left in him.”

The 2014 Romo helped lead the Cowboys into two rounds of playoff football. Dallas finished 12-4, winning the division while Romo completed 69.9 percent of his passes that year for a total of 3,705 yards, 34 touchdowns and just nine interceptions.

Unfortunately, Romo spent most of 2015 sidelined with clavicle injuries. Then even before the start to the 2016 season Romo ended up on the sidelines once again after he broke a bone in his back. In the end, Romo played only one series of drives in the Cowboys final 2016 NFL game.

Soon enough, Romo will have to make a decision regarding his career. He is 37 years old, and could potentially be a major upgrade at quarterback for a team in need. This is provided he can keep healthy.

This seems to be the consensus from Church as well. Or, Romo could decide to play things safe for his health and call it quits.

Either way, it is nice to see that he has such devoted support from a guy he has been teammates with since 2010.
