Report: Wade Phillips agrees to become Rams defensive coordinator

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Less than a day into the job, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has reeled in a big fish for his coaching staff. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has agreed to take over the same position with the Rams.

Phillips, who spent the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos, was previously expected to interview for the vacant Washington Redskins defensive coordinator position on Friday.

But the Rams were able to act fast after news of that potential interview broke Thursday evening.

Considered one of the best defensive minds in the game, Phillips has 30-plus years of coaching experience in the NFL. He’s led one of the top defenses in the NFL in Denver over the past two seasons, acting as one of the primary reasons the team hoisted the Lombardi last February.

McVay, 30, is the youngest head coach in NFL history. For him to be able to add someone of Phillips’ ilk is absolutely huge for the inexperienced head coach. It’s a major coup for a Rams team that’s looking to move on following a disastrous initial season back in Los Angeles.
