Report: Phil Jackson assured Carmelo Anthony he doesn’t hold same opinion as Charley Rosen

NBA draft, Carmelo Anthony

A lot was made last week about an article written by Phil Jackson’s media friend Charley Rosen in which he put Carmelo Anthony on blast.

He criticized Anthony’s legs as being going, going, almost gone and wrote that he doesn’t play much defense any more. On top of all that, he wrote that “Anthony has outlived his usefulness in New York.”

The article, and all the chatter that occurred by media outlets everywhere prompted Anthony and Jackson to have a meeting, after which it was agreed by both parties that Anthony is still a part of the team’s future (more on that here).

Now more information is coming out about their meeting, the juiciest aspect being that Jackson reportedly told Anthony that he doesn’t hold the same opinion of Rosen.

“In the meeting, Jackson told Anthony he did not subscribe to the criticisms in the article and the story did not speak for him, sources said,” wrote Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

Furthermore, according to Al Iannazzone of Newsday, the Knicks want to retain Anthony, “as long as it’s mutual.”

At this point, Anthony has to take Jackson at his word. The Knicks haven’t made any reported moves to attempt trading the veteran forward, and he himself has made it clear he wants to stay.

However, there is going to an underlying current of discontent as long as New York continues to lose more than it wins, especially with all the moves made this past offseason to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Heading into the second half of the season with a record of 19-26, things have to improve quickly before more strife envelops the organization. Though, with just three games separating New York and No. 8 seed Chicago, it’s surely possible for the Knicks to turn the ship around.
