Report: Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight in ‘exploratory phase’

After months of speculation and many jabs thrown by both men, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor might actually get their chance to fight. Seriously.

If this did ever go down, it would be the biggest fight of the new century. McGregor and Mayweather are not only the two best fighters of their profession but the two biggest trash talkers of their respective sports.

Recently, McGregor said he’d need $100 million to fight Mayweather. This was met by a response by Mayweather, who said he’d give the MMA superstar $15 million and a cut of the pay-per-view action, per ESPN’s Brian Campbell.

Money Mayweather also threw some shade McGregor’s way.

“You guys keep hearing all these different rumors about different fighters want to face Floyd Mayweather,” he said. “Everybody keeps talking about Conor McGregor. He’s blowing smoke up everybody’s a–. Dana White, the UFC — let’s make it happen. Bring him over to the boxing world, and I’ll show him what it’s like.”

That Mayweather would get more money if the two fighters did meet up in the ring is a given. He’s been in the game as the top dog for far longer than McGregor, but you have to believe both men would haul in a huge sum of cash regardless.

Another thing that would need to be worked out is whether or not McGregor would be allowed to employ any of his MMA tactics or if it would be a square boxing match.

These two issues — money and fighting rules — are just part of the “many, many hurdles to overcome,” as Ariel Helwani stated. But if the hurdles can be overcome, we’d love to see if McGregor could finally do what nobody else has been able to do — knock Mayweather off his perch.
