Rays trade Logan Forsythe to the Dodgers for top prospect José De León

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a trade with a team from president Andrew Friedman’s past — the Tampa Bay Rays. The Dodgers have sent star prospect José De León to the Rays for Logan Forsythe.

Both the Los Angeles and Tampa confirmed the deal on their official Twitter pages.

Forsythe is a right-handed bat, so he figures to help the Dodgers against left-handed pitching, which was a serious weakness of the team in 2016.

Over the last two seasons combined, Forsythe hit 37 home runs, scored 145 runs, drove in 120 and stole 15 bases. The veteran also slashed at .273/.347/.444. He will be the team’s starting second baseman and could easily slot in to the second or sixth spots in the batting order.

This will also mark a return to the National League West for Forsythe, who was on the San Diego Padres from 2011-13.

Of course, De León is a big part of the deal, as well. He was baseball’s 33rd ranked prospect in 2016 and had a monster year in the minors. In 86.1 innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City, De León struck out 111 batters en route to posting a 2.61 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. He did struggle in four Major League appearances, posting a 6.35 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and a much more modest 15 strikeouts in 17 innings.
