Ray Lewis ‘definitely looking into’ coaching in the NFL

Baltimore Ravens legend Ray Lewis was one of the smartest, most instinctual linebackers to ever play in the NFL. And he’s considering taking his knowledge to the next level with a move into coaching.

The two-time Super Bowl champion is in Hawaii this week helping coach up the guys on the AFC side of the Pro Bowl. He acknowledged that coaching in the NFL is something that’s been piquing his interest the past few years.

“I’ve been asked that a lot,” Lewis said before Friday’s Pro Bowl practice (h/t Ravens team website). “A few years out, a few years removed for me – I’m thinking about it a little bit. My sons are in college, and I’m living a good life right now following them around, seeing the things that they’re doing,” Lewis said.

While he’s not ready to commit to the long hours that come with the grind of the NFL, Lewis is clearly mulling over the possibility of following in former Ravens teammate Ed Reed’s footsteps. Reed joined up with Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills this past season as an assistant coaching defensive backs.

Lewis has enjoyed the pace of life as a television analyst for ESPN and FOX Sports One, but the itch to coach isn’t leaving him at this time.

“I don’t know if I’ll go directly into it, but it’s something I’m definitely looking into,” Lewis said.

One of the most emotional, yet locked-in players to ever strap on a helmet and shoulder pads, Lewis would likely make a tremendous coach if he ever does decide to go down that road. His ability to diagnose opposing offenses made him a Hall of Famer, and his knowledge — not to mention his motivational tactics — would be an invaluable asset to any team.
