Matt Ryan, Falcons expected to talk contract extension soon

Coming off the best performance of what has largely been an up-and-down career, Matt Ryan has his Atlanta Falcons on the brink of Super Bowl LI. A win over the Green Bay Packers at home on Sunday would send Atlanta to just its second Super Bowl in franchise history.

It now looks like the Falcons are prepared to reward Ryan for his tremendous play under center.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Falcons and Ryan are expected to engage in discussions regarding a contract extension during the offseason.

Even with two years remaining on his deal, this shouldn’t be considered too much of a surprise. Ryan is currently playing under a five-year, $103.8 million contract he signed back in July of 2013.

Most teams want to avoid having a franchise quarterback head into the final year of his contract without an extension being signed. For the Falcons, that means coming to terms on a long-term deal with Ryan within the next 18 months or so.

Ryan, 31, is coming off a 2016 regular season that saw him throw for 4,944 yards with 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions en route to leading the league’s top-scoring offense.
