Ezekiel Elliott has been cleared by police in an alleged domestic violence case since early September, yet the NFL is still investigating the incident. This isn’t something that sits well with the Dallas Cowboys Running back, who said he wants “closure” after Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.
“I do want closure,” Elliott told reporters on Sunday (h/t Todd Archer of ESPN). “I would rather it not drag on this long. If there was something to find, which there’s not, they would’ve found it by now. The police did a very thorough investigation. I will tell you this — it just seems like they’re dragging their feet right now. Who knows, man? I’m just ready for it to end.”
The running back has played the entire season with this investigation hanging over his head, producing outstanding results for the Cowboys. He finished with 1,994 all-purpose yards and 16 touchdowns, helping Dallas earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC with a 13-3 record.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, one of the hold-ups in this investigation could stem from Elliott failing to respond to follow-up questions regarding its investigation.
The original claim of domestic violence was levied against Elliott by ex-girlfriend Tiffany Thompson. The police investigation concluded its investigation without charging Elliott because “conflicting and inconsistent information across all incidents resulting in concern regarding the sufficiency of evidence to support the filing of criminal charges.”
People close to Elliott claim that Thompson’s allegations are completely false and were made up and that she had previously threatened to “ruin him” if he broke up with here (more on that here).
It’s understandable that Elliott would want to finally put this matter behind him. It’s also understandable that the NFL is taking its time with the investigation after it botched so many previous incidents surrounding domestic violence. Hopefully the investigation can be concluded in short order.
