Eagles to give Carson Wentz input in personnel decisions

This is a new philosophy. Unless we’re talking about the greatest quarterbacks of this era, rarely do players get the ability to give input on what their team does from a player personnel standpoint.

After just one season in the NFL, it appears that the Philadelphia Eagles are willing to let Carson Wentz help their front office make decisions on what players they add in free agency and the draft.

“The way the league rules are, you’d love to be able to bring him down and throw to these guys,” he said. “That would be unbelievable,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman told 94.1 WIP in Philadlephia on Monday (h/t the Philly Voice). “It just doesn’t work that way. But from our perspective, we want to make sure that he’s on board with some of these things, and he’s looking at some… probably more in free agency than in the draft, because it’s hard for him to get caught up on the draft prospects.”

On one hand, the Eagles want to make sure Wentz is comfortable with the receivers the team adds to the equation. One of the primary reasons the 2016 No. 2 overall pick struggled as his rookie season drew on was the play of the team’s wide receivers. Jordan Matthews continued to struggle with drops. Meanwhile, former first-round pick Nelson Agholor was so bad that the Eagles took him out of the wide receiver rotation completely.

This all led to a disastrous final three quarters of the season that saw Wentz throw nine touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions en route to leading the Eagles to a 4-8 record in their final 12 games.

On the other hand, this should really be left up to those actually tasked with identifying and bringing on talent. Roseman himself has not been afraid to throw shade the way of former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly for his horrible handling of the team’s roster in the past. Now set to potentially rely on Wentz, Roseman could be setting himself up for failure here.

One really has to wonder how much impact any quarterback should have on roster evaluation. That’s only magnified by Wentz’s lack of professional experience and the need for him to actually focus on improving as a player. This has disaster written all over it.
