Brock Osweiler named starter for Texans in Wild Card game against Raiders

Brock Osweiler

As expected, Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien named Brock Osweiler the starting quarterback for Saturday’s Wild Card game against the Oakland Raiders. Tom Savage is still in the league concussion protocol and he’ll back up Osweiler, if he gets clearance to suit up.

At this point, it’s anybody’s guess if this is good or bad news for the Texans. Neither Osweiler or Savage has shown much of anything positive this year for Houston’s offense.

Osweiler was benched for Savage just a few weeks ago after throwing two horrid interceptions in the first half against the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was the continuation of what has been a disastrous first season with the Texans after Osweiler took a four-year deal worth $72 million to move from Denver to Houston. He’s been a bust almost since Week 1, finishing the regular season with 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, completing just 59 percent of his passes.

In Savage’s limited time this year, he completed 63 percent of his attempts while failing to throw a single touchdown. He also fell victim to a horrible sack-fumble combination this Sunday that resulted in a Tennessee Titans touchdown.

Thankfully for the Texans, the Raiders are without a viable option at quarterback this weekend as well. It’s been reported that the team is expecting rookie Connor Cook to get his first start this Satruday, with Matt McGloin expected to be unavailable with a shoulder injury.

Needless to say, we’re not expecting a barn burner when these teams clash.
