Brett Favre: ‘No better asset’ than Aaron Rodgers’ ability to elevate his team

It sure seems like the rift between Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre is well behind them based on comments the Hall of Fame quarterback made about his former backup.

The two former teammates have had a few moments together in the public eye the past couple of years in which it was clear the old rivalry was dead and buried. Then again, just this year, Favre questioned Rodgers’ leadership after a tough loss midway through the season (more on that here).

Favre is singing a different tune now that Rogers has the Packers ready to compete in the NFC Championship Game Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Speaking about the ridiculous throw Rodgers made to tight end Jared Cook last weekend to set up the game-winning field goal against the Dallas Cowboys (watch here), Favre praised Rodgers with the biggest compliment you could imagine.

Favre’s message is on point.

Let’s not forget that it was Cook — a guy long known as an underachiever and who has displayed stone hands all too often — who came down with the clutch reception to set up the game-winner. Let us also not forget that Rodgers has been dealing with significant deficiencies on offense the past two years yet continues to produce prodigiously, proving he can make it happen despite missing his best players.

The ability to bring out the best in one’s teammates is an asset that all the greats have displayed. Favre had it, Tom Brady has it, Joe Montana had it and surely Rodgers has it. We’ve all seen it. But for Favre to make a point of highlighting it is of particular significance because of the contentious relationship he and Rodgers had for so many years.

It’s nice to see he’s completely behind Rodgers as he attempts to bring another championship back to Lambeau Field this winter.
