Report: Browns plan to start Robert Griffin III Sunday

Robert Griffin III

According to ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano, the Cleveland Browns are expected to start Robert Griffin III at quarterback this weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals. This is, of course, barring any unforeseen health setbacks.

Griffin, the former Baylor star, Heisman Trophy winner and Washington Redskins’ second overall pick, has been on the injured reserve for the past 11 games after injuring the Coracoid bone in his throwing shoulder in Cleveland’s season opener.

This has been his first season in Cleveland after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Redskins. His first two years in Washington were solid if not exceptional at times, but things came crashing down on the former first-round pick in 2014. He was released by Washington in 2015, which decided to go with Kirk Cousins at quarterback, and ended up in Cleveland as potentially the answer to the Browns’ long-time quarterback struggles.

And of course, in true Browns fashion, 2016 has been a disappointment for Griffin. Though, he did recently say that he expects to play a role in Cleveland’s last four games.

“I just want to come in, give the team as much of a spark as I possibly can, have fun and hopefully we can go 4-0, because that’s what we’ve been working for in this last quarter of the season,” he said via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “I think it’s real important.”

Cleveland is still looking for its first win, though it’s worth noting that in a meeting earlier this season, the Bengals beat the Browns, 31-17. Griffin III threw for 190 yards and an interception in his only playing time this season. He also rushed five times for 37 yards (7.4 yards per carry).

At this point, Cleveland has nothing to lose.
