Report: Jim Harbaugh won’t return to NFL in 2017

Jim Harbaugh hired former 49ers executive Tom Gamble, according to a report

How much interest does Jim Harbaugh have in returning to the NFL? The University of Michigan coach has made it clear that any rumors are false, which you can read about here.

Harbaugh’s denial has been corroborated by another report.

“In this case, the denial is the truth, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media,” Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said, citing the insider. “Rapoport says that Harbaugh won’t be returning to the NFL in 2017, but that he eventually could be back.”

Harbaugh’s history does indeed suggest that he’ll be back in the NFL at some point. He coached at Stanford and with the San Francisco 49ers for four years each and has never been with any team for a longer period of time as head coach.

But he’s only been at Michigan for two years. On top of that, neither of the two already existing vacancies (Los Angeles Rams, Jacksonville Jaguars) offer the type of opportunity that would be likely to lure him away from a top college job.

That said, we can expect to hear Harbaugh — one of the hottest names out there — mentioned as a possible replacement for every single head-coaching vacancy that pops up in the near future.
