Gary Kubiak won’t rule out Paxton Lynch as starter in Week 17

Paxton Lynch

The Denver Broncos were eliminated from playoff contention Sunday night. With nothing to play for other than draft positioning in Week 17, head coach Gary Kubiak isn’t ruling out Paxton Lynch as the starter next Sunday when the Broncos take on the Oakland Raiders.

Kubiak said a bit later that he’ll “play everybody” Sunday, meaning we’ll see Lynch at least for a portion of the game.

At this point, the Broncos would be smart to give Lynch plenty of valuable reps against a team like the Raiders, who are still fighting for the AFC’s top seed.

We know what Trevor Siemian can offer. He’s a guy who can make some big plays when he throws on time to his receivers but who is also limited. Without a running game to balance things out the past few games, Siemian has been extremely ineffective, throwing for just one touchdown with three interceptions.

Lynch hasn’t been great when given chances this year, but he’s got a truck-load of potential and needs every chance he can get to play in competitive situations. It seems crystal clear that Siemian isn’t the team’s future. With that in mind, it’s time to unleash the rookie, who’ll almost certainly be the starter next year unless Denver lures in a top veteran like, say, Tony Romo.
