Yankees reportedly not interested in Yoenis Cespedes

Yoenis Cespedes

After clearing up a ton of room on their payroll following the retirements of Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira as well as the trade of Brian McCann earlier this month, the New York Yankees will have money to spend during the winter.

But don’t expect any of that cash to be doled out to New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, who is considered one of the most highly-regarded free agents in the game.

According to Christian Red of the NY Daily News, Cespedes is not part of the Yankees’ off-season plans.

The report went on to indicate that New York’s three main priorities this offseason is bringing back Aroldis Chapman, signing a designated hitter and adding a starting pitcher. Cespedes himself doesn’t fit into that plan. As an elite-level outfielder, it would make absolutely no sense for any team to sign the Cuban star to simply be a designated hitter.

Cespedes is also reportedly seeking a deal between $125 and $135 million. If that is indeed the case, the Yankees would likely be better off spending the money elsewhere. This is magnified by the fact that outfield doesn’t seem to be a priority here.

With Brett Gardner, Jacoby Ellsbury and youngster Aaron Judge potentially slated to start in the outfield, there also doesn’t seem to be any room here. Short of the Yankees potentially moving Gardner, don’t expect outfield to be much of a priority this winter.
