Report: Pirates increasingly likely to trade Andrew McCutchen

MLB stars

It sure looks like the Pittsburgh Pirates will be moving on from former MVP Andrew McCutchen at some point here soon. Rumors have continued to swirl that they’re looking to move their former franchise cornerstone and most-talented player.

Now comes this report from Ken Rosenthal over at Fox Sports suggesting that a trade is increasingly likely.

“Of all the big names available in trade, Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen might be the most likely to go,” the MLB insider reported. “The Pirates continue to explore deals involving McCutchen, major-league sources say.”

Pittsburgh continues to work under the philosophy that it will listen to offers for players that have two years or less remaining on their contracts. Set to become a free agent following the 2018 season, McCutchen falls under that umbrella.

The 30-year-old outfielder is coming off a career-worst season that saw him hit .256 with 24 homers and 79 RBI. He also posted a substandard .336 on-base percentage in failing to earn an All-Star appearance for the first time since 2010.

Despite this, there’s always going to be a strong market for a five-tool player that’s seemingly still in the prime of his career.

Per Rosenthal, Pittsburgh had discussions with the Washington Nationals about McCutchen prior to the non-waiver trade deadline this past July. The Nationals could definitely be in on the former MVP.

As it is, look for Cutch to be moved here soon. It just remains to be seen where he might be headed.
