Ohio State gets fans to perform Nike ad during game

The Ohio State Buckeyes got their fans to do something Saturday during the game against Michigan that might just blow your mind. The fans combined to perform a Nike ad as their beloved Buckeyes took on the hated Wolverines.

As CBS Sports’ Jon Solomon points out, this goes against the spirit of amateurism in a major way. Then again, that’s nothing new for either school in this one, or the NCAA as a whole.

Michigan and Ohio State feature Nike gear exclusively and have been used by the company to advertise its wares.

Earlier this year, Michigan players were given the first RE2PECT gear to wear since Derek Jeter’s retirement (see here).

Ohio State players were gifted custom made LeBron James Soldier X cleats for Saturday’s rivalry game against the Wolverines. And Nike donated special infant kicks to babies born at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center on Friday and Saturday (more on that here).

Schools are being paid to advertise to corporations during a time in which athletes are being continually scrutinized for taking any sort of gift and facing huge penalties if they do. The juxtaposition of these two extremes is something that vexes this scribe, but that’s just the world we live in.
