Pistons moving to downtown Detroit, will play in Little Caesars Arena

Starting with the 2017-18 season, the Detroit Pistons will be playing in the new Little Caesars Arena. They’ll share the venue with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings.

An official statement was released on Tuesday morning, breaking this exciting news.

“The move will include construction of a new state-of-the-art Pistons practice facility and corporate headquarters that will bring substantial new investment and economic activity to the city, and a comprehensive community benefits plan that will bring millions of dollars more into Detroit neighborhoods,” the official release said.

This means that the Pistons will make Detroit their full time home for the first time since 1978.

They have played at The Palace of Auburn Hills since the 1988-89 season. From the 1978-79 season through the 1987-88 campaign, they played their home games at the Pontiac Silverdome. Until then, the Pistons made their home in Detroit at Olympia Stadium (1957-61) and Cobo Arena (1961-78).

Pistons’ owner Tom Gores shared his excitement for the move.

“This is a historic day for our franchise, and for the City of Detroit,” Gores said in the official statement. “We’re moving to a beautiful new arena that will provide a state-of-the-art fan experience, and we’re investing in the future of Detroit.”

The move will not only put the Pistons and Red Wings under the same roof. The arena will be in the same district as Comerica Park and Ford Field — the respective homes of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions.
