The state of Florida is currently being hammered by Hurricane Matthew, but that won’t stop Florida State and Miami from hitting the gridiron at Hard Rock Stadium Saturday night.
One thing that will be missing is a state police presence, Florida Governor Rick Scott’s office made clear, via Gary Fineout of the Associated Press.
Admin of @FLGovScott msg to @floridastate & UM – we will not provide any law-enforcement help for game. They will be busy elsewhere

Admin of @FLGovScott says reason they will not provide state law-enforcement to UM/FSU game is bc they are busy dealing with real hurricane

This doesn’t mean there will be no police presence at all, but it does significantly limit the amount of security that will be at the big game.
Local cops of course could still be at the game – only talking about troopers and other state law-enforcement

Tim Reynolds of the AP detailed one reason for concern.
This isn't good. FHP usually escorts team buses – Miami and visitor – to stadium, things of that nature. https://t.co/CYlwCu1hB3

With limited resources in a time of crisis, this is a move that makes perfect sense in the broad scope of what Florida needs.
However, it remains to be seen if a lack of police security will have a negative impact on the upcoming game in Miami. This is one of the biggest games of Week 6, and tensions are likely to run high between these two teams, and potentially between their fans.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all those being adversely affected by the events of Hurricane Matthew. Stay safe.
