Five most shocking events from college football Week 7

One of the biggest appeals in regards to college football for the average fan is that, any given week, something amazing could happen. From the “Kick-Six” to the “Bush Push,” miracle plays and impossible endings occur on practically a weekly basis.

Last week brought the nation memorable moments such as a Navy Midshipmen upset of the top ten Houston Cougars, and Week 7 didn’t fail to leave fans on the edge of their seats.

Here are the top five most shocking events in college football Week 7.

1. USC wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster annihilates the Arizona Wildcat defense

USC junior wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster is considered by many to be the best player at his position in all of college football.

Saturday, he showed the nation just why he is thought of so highly.

After running a simple switch right out of the slot, Smith-Schuster powered through four tackle attempts to will his way to the endzone.

It was truly a Herculean effort from the USC star, and it helped the Trojans put the Wildcats down hard, 48-14.

2. West Virginia absolutely dominates one of the most explosive offenses in the country

In a game that many expected to be a high-scoring shootout, it was West Virginia’s defense that stole the show. The Mountaineers limited the potent Red Raider offense to 379 yards and 17 points, both season lows for the hometown Squad.

Highlighting the defensive domination, West Virginia flew around all game, laying physical hits from beginning to end while leaving Lubbock as victors.

Not only did the West Virginia defense play with physicality, they swarmed to the ball all game and managed to sack the elusive Pat Mahomes 4 times, extinguishing his Heisman Trophy hopes along the way.

One of only 11 undefeated teams, West Virginia seems to have found a suffocating defense to finally pair with its explosive offense. This could be a scary team as the playoff selection rolls around, though big tests still loom.

3. Alabama demoralizes Tennessee, Nick Saban throws shade

Let’s start with the obvious: Alabama is really freaking good. Ridiculously good.

That being said, going on the road — to Neyland stadium, no less — to face a top-10 ranked Vols team and obliterating them 49-10 is on another level.

Saban definitely refuses to pull punches in his press conferences and has been given no reason to do so either way.

Until someone manages to blow out this great team (not happening), Nick Saban’s program will continue to dominate. He he will continue to be up front in his press conferences.

4. Clemson needs overtime to beat a surprising NC State team

Following a game in which they beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 10-3 in the middle of Hurricane Matthew, a resilient North Carolina State Wolfpack squad traveled to Death Valley to face the #3 ranked Clemson Tigers in what would come to be a fantastic game.

While NC State would come out on the losing end of this game, Dave Doeren has the Wolfpack primed for stardom, and they may just be a force to be reckoned with in the ACC.

The game had a little bit of everything honestly.

From Deshaun Watson’s first career pick-six (watch here) to the game-winning interception in overtime by Clemson cornerback Marcus Edmond, this game had a little bit of everything that makes college football great.

5. Houston ekes by Tulsa at home 

One week after an upset loss to the now No. 24-ranked Navy Midshipmen, the Houston Cougars were lined up to play what looked to be a tad bit of a redemption game.

Seems like Tulsa didn’t get the memo that they were supposed to roll over. The Cougars needed a fumble returned for a touchdown by linebacker Emeke Egbule and a fourth-down stop on the one-yard line with no time left to squeak by the 4-2 Tulsa Golden Hurricanes, 38-31.

While Tom Herman’s name has been mentioned repeatedly in the coaching carousel for the upcoming offseason, games such as this one and the loss last week to Navy may begin to give schools some hesitation on hiring him to head their respective teams.
