Richard Sherman takes to Twitter to defend controversial play

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman isn’t one to hold back. He’s never afraid to speak up about the issues surrounding the NFL, and society itself as a whole.

So we shouldn’t be surprised that Sherman himself took to social media Monday night in an attempt to fend off criticism directed at him regarding the controversy that Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons brought on.

In the GIF Sherman embedded above, we can see Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones pushing off at the line of scrimmage. In reality, it should have been called illegal hands to the face on Jones.

This is in direct response to allegations that the Seahawks received some home cooking by officials on the very same play late in Sunday’s win over the Falcons.

With Atlanta down by two points and just over one minute remaining in the game, Sherman appeared to interfere with Jones down the field. It was on fourth down and took place in an area of the field where Atlanta could have gone for the game-winning field goal if a penalty had been called.

Here’s the play in question. You be the judge.

It sure did look like Sherman hooked Jones’ arm before actually making contact with the receiver prior to the ball’s arrival. Instead of calling a penalty, officials held their whistles, enabling Seattle to win the hotly-contested battle between first-place teams.

Even if Jones should have been called for a penalty earlier in the play, the end result would have likely been a replay of fourth down with off-setting penalties.

Though, we can definitely understand why Sherman decided to take to social media. Very little focus has been on the beginning of the play. In this, he’s most definitely not wrong.
