Report: NFL scouts enamored with UCLA QB Josh Rosen

Josh Rosen

UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen is already drawing significant interest from NFL scouts, despite the fact he’s not draft eligible until 2018.

This is what Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller is reporting midway through the 2016 college football season.

In particular, Miller reports scouts as saying Rosen, if he were draft eligible this year, would easily be the highest-graded passer over the likes of DeShone Kizer and Deshaun Watson. Both of those quarterbacks, scouts believe, have yet to separate themselves as legitimate franchise passers.

The timing of this report is particularly interesting. Rosen is currently out indefinitely with a nerve issue in his throwing shoulder (more on that here).

It’s also interesting that scouts are so high on Rosen, just based purely on his production. Through a season-and-a-half, he’s putting up stats that make you wonder if he might struggle at the next level. Drops aside (UCLA receivers have done him no favors), Rosen is still completing just 59.7 percent of his passes. He has also been a bit turnover prone, with 16 interceptions in 19 games.

That’s just box-score scouting, however.

Rosen’s current head coach, Jim Mora — a guy who has coached at the next level — has been extremely high on Rosen since last year. He recently compared the quarterback to Peyton Manning in terms of preparation, work ethic and intelligence.

That Rosen possesses an NFL arm is undeniable. That he has the physical tools to make plays is something nobody can argue against. However, one wonders if he has the extra intangibles that will lead to greatness at the next level.

NFL scouts apparently love what they see. It’s going to be interesting to watch things unfold in the next couple of seasons before he becomes eligible for the 2018 NFL Draft.
