Jets place Geno Smith on injured reserve

Geno Smith

It looks like the New York Jets and quarterback Geno Smith did not get the news they were hoping for on Tuesday. After Smith received a second opinion on the knee he injured on Sunday, the former second-round pick was promptly placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a torn ACL.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Concerns grew following his departure from last week’s game that Smith suffered a torn ACL. Preliminary tests conducted on the knee showed the torn ligament.

Unfortunately for Smith, this ends his season and likely his career with the Jets. Set to become a free agent following the season, Smith was pegged as the Jets’ starter for Week 7 after Ryan Fitzpatrick strugggled. He exited the field after less than a half of action.

With Smith sidelined, it stands to reason that Fitzpatrick will be under center for the remainder of the year. Though, should the team fall further out of contention, Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg might get a shot.
