Hawks reportedly sign guard Dennis Schroder to four-year, $70 million extension

Dennis Schroder

The Atlanta Hawks made it perfectly clear that Dennis Schroder was their point guard of the future when the team traded Jeff Teague to the Indiana Pacers during the offseason.

That commitment has taken on an entirely new level just as the Hawks are prepared to start the 2016-17 season. According to ESPN’s Marc Stein and Zach Lowe, Atlanta has signed Schroder to a four-year, $70 million contract extension.

This really is a nice move for both sides. Schroder, 23, was set to become a restricted free agent following this season. If he had performed at a high level as the team’s full-time starter, his price tag would have gone up significantly. From a Hawks perspective, the idea here was to lock him up before that become a possibility.

Schroder, a native of Germany, jumped on to the scene big time as a third-year player in 2015-16. He averaged 11 points and 4.4 assists while taking on a much larger role in Atlanta’s backcourt.
